Sharpening the Pencil

Sharpening the Pencil

Overheard at the monastery between the novice and the master -

I once asked you why you were doing something and you replied that it was important to occasionally sharpen the pencil. But the thing for me - I keep breaking the lead point of my pencil.

A bunch of lessons to be drawn from that. Sharp knives require less force. Go easier. Buy better quality pencils. Sharpen but don’t over sharpen, or in other words maintain situational awareness. Know your tools.

Remember that the purpose of sharpening the pencil is...to sharpen the pencil.

Special thanks to Don Sharaf and Thich Nhat Hanh -

See you next week.
